Not by Choice uses humour of the real, bittersweet kind to speak about loneliness, family ties, the generational divide and the need to belong. In a time of deafening media noise, false authorities and a general absence of humility, the play gives back what we are all missing: honest communication, empathy and lightness of spirit. At its centre are two men brought together by chance rather than choice: Vlado, an ageing uncle withdrawn into the safety of his own home, and his thirty-year-old nephew Petar, an actor who lost his way, if he ever found it at all, and who runs from life as stubbornly as his uncle runs from people. Through their arguments, their quips and their unexpected moments of tenderness, it becomes clear that loneliness and fear are universal, whatever your age.

A play with a message Not by Choice is a call for solidarity between generations. It shows the young that their elders are not a burden but a support: a source of financial stability, of hard-won wisdom, of advice drawn from experience there is no shortcut to. At the same time, it reminds the old that the young can give back what the years take away. They can ease the everyday, bring company and laughter, and bring the feeling of not being alone. Vlado and Petar learn this the hard way, but in the end they discover what matters most: they need each other.
